Follow the rollout of Alberta’s legal casinos live

Once Alberta’s regulated market launched on July 13, several Alberta online casinos opened their doors, among them BetMGM, bet365 and BetRivers. Operators such as Jackpot City Casino had already been running in Ontario’s regulated market, leaving them well placed to move into Alberta with tested platforms, licensing know-how and ready-to-go infrastructure.

Others, 888casino among them, hold registration with the AGLC yet have not gone live. To see which operators are approved, browse the AGLC register, or check the AiGC’s directory of regulated iGaming sites for the ones already running; you can also follow Alberta casino launches in the table below.

Alberta’s new iGaming framework: how we got here

Alberta’s move toward a regulated online casino sector took years to arrive. The new framework lets private sportsbooks and online casinos apply for licences so they can operate legally across the province.

A two-agency model governs the market. Regulation, licensing and compliance fall to the AGLC, while the freshly created AiGC looks after day-to-day market operations.

What makes a regulated casino market positive for Alberta?

Alberta’s online casino scene is no longer a single-option race. Since July 13, 2026, licensed private operators have joined PlayAlberta as part of the province’s revamped iGaming model, bringing more legal variety, tougher safeguards and a livelier market in which to find the ideal AB online casino for you.

Are casino winnings taxed in Alberta?

Across Canada, and in Alberta, winnings from recreational gambling are usually tax-free, and that includes online casino payouts. According to the Canada Revenue Agency, gambling purely for enjoyment does not amount to income from employment, business or property.

That said, professional gamblers who make a steady living from gambling could be required to declare them as taxable income to the CRA.

Over 50 software providers have been approved ahead of AB’s licensed market launch, among them top studios such as Hacksaw, Pragmatic Play and Relax Gaming.

What gambling revenue does Alberta bring in?

PlayAlberta currently counts more than 434,000 registered users and holds over 45% of Alberta’s regulated iGaming sector. Across 2024-2025 alone, players produced $235 million in net sales – up $42 million on the year before, showing that appetite for legal, regulated options keeps growing.

Over the decades, Alberta’s gambling laws have changed a great deal. During the 1980s, the province brought in a charitable gambling model that let non-profit organizations obtain licences to run casino events, lotteries, bingo and raffles as fundraisers for local causes.

By the 1990s, private land-based casinos had become legal in Alberta, all supervised by AGLC. Then in 2020, AGLC introduced PlayAlberta.ca – the province’s first legal online gambling site, and still its sole one.
