Lightning Baccarat: Live Baccarat with Lightning Card Multipliers

Lightning Baccarat is a live baccarat game from Evolution, launched in 2020 as the third title in its Lightning series. In every round, one to five Lightning Cards receive multipliers from 2x to 8x, and a winning hand that holds those cards pays more. Each main bet carries a 20% Lightning Fee in return, and the game suits players who like baccarat’s simple rules but want an occasional chance of a bigger win.

Evolution announced Lightning Baccarat in January 2020, ahead of the ICE trade show in London. It followed Lightning Roulette and Lightning Dice and shares the black-and-gold Art Deco look of the series. Evolution released it for desktop, tablet and smartphone from the start.

Card dealing shoe and a stack of chips on green baccarat felt

The card game underneath is standard baccarat. A dealer draws cards from an eight-deck shoe, and you bet on whether the Player hand or the Banker hand will finish closer to 9, or on a Tie. The lightning layer sits on top: a separate virtual 52-card deck is used to pick the Lightning Cards, so each one is a specific card, such as the seven of hearts.

How to play Lightning Baccarat

You do not make any decisions after you bet, so a round is quick:

  1. Place a bet on Player, Banker or Tie. You can also add the Player Pair and Banker Pair side bets. A 20% Lightning Fee is added to your main bet, so a $10 bet on Player costs $12.
  2. When betting closes, the Lightning Round starts. Between one and five Lightning Cards are drawn at random, and each gets a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x.
  3. The dealer deals two cards each to Player and Banker, and a third card to either hand when the standard drawing rules require it.
  4. The hand closest to 9 wins. Card values are standard: aces count as one, tens and face cards as zero, and only the last digit of a total counts.
  5. If your bet wins and its hand holds one or more Lightning Cards, your payout is multiplied. When there are several Lightning Cards in the hand, their multipliers are multiplied together.

Banker Pair9:1Up to 576:1 in total, when the pair cards are Lightning Cards

How the Lightning Cards work

A Lightning Card only counts if it appears in the winning hand. Suppose the Lightning Cards are the king of spades at 4x and the three of clubs at 2x. If you bet on Player and the Player hand wins with both of those cards, your win is multiplied by 4 × 2, which is 8x. If one of those cards lands in the losing Banker hand, it does nothing for a Player bet.

Since a hand has at most three cards and the top multiplier is 8x, the Player and Banker bets can reach 512x. For a Tie, the cards of both hands count, which is how Evolution arrives at a ceiling of 262,144x. These are theoretical maximums that need several rare events at once. Most winning hands have no Lightning Card at all and pay the base amount.

The 20% Lightning Fee

The fee pays for the multipliers, and it is charged on every main bet whether it wins or loses. Using the $10 Player bet from above: if Player wins with no Lightning Card, you get back your $10 stake plus $10, but the round cost you $12, so your net gain is $8. If Player loses, you lose $12. The Tie also pays 5:1 instead of the usual 8:1, and the pair bets pay 9:1 instead of 11:1.

Published RTP figures put Player and Banker at roughly 98.6% to 98.8%, although sources differ on which of the two is higher. The Tie returns 94.51%, and the pair bets return about 88.35%.

Tips for playing Lightning Baccarat

No strategy can beat the house edge in Lightning Baccarat. The cards and the Lightning Cards are both random, and every hand is independent. These points can help you play with clear expectations:

  • Count the fee as part of your stake. A $25 bet is really $30, so plan your budget around the full cost of each hand.
  • Compare the bets on their RTP. Player and Banker sit close to 98.7%, while the Tie and the pairs return much less over time.
  • Expect most wins to be ordinary. Multiplied wins are the exception, and a large one needs several Lightning Cards in the winning hand.
  • Do not rely on the scoreboards and roadmaps. They record past hands and do not predict the next one.
  • Stop when your budget is gone and take breaks between sessions. Our responsible gambling page lists support options if gambling stops being fun.

Players must be 19 or older to gamble online in most of Canada, or 18 or older in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

The comparison shows the trade clearly. On Player and Banker, the long-run return is about the same as, or slightly lower than, at a standard table, and results swing more because of the fee and the multipliers. The Tie is the odd one out: it pays less per win, but the multipliers lift its return well above the standard 8:1 Tie. It still returns less than the Player and Banker bets.
