Lightning Roulette: European Roulette with Lightning Multipliers
Lightning Roulette is a live roulette game from Evolution that adds random multipliers to a standard single-zero wheel. In every round, one to five numbers are struck by lightning and pay 50x to 500x on straight-up bets. Many players like it because the familiar European rules stay in place, while each single-number bet has a small chance of a much larger payout.
Where to play Lightning Roulette in Canada

Evolution first showed Lightning Roulette at the ICE trade show in London in February 2018, and the live table went into service that spring. The game takes place in a black-and-gold Art Deco studio with lighting and sound effects, where a presenter hosts each round and an automatic wheel launches the ball. Evolution says the table can take a virtually unlimited number of players at the same time.

Two separate systems decide each result. The physical wheel picks the winning number, while a random number generator picks the lightning numbers and their multipliers. The wheel itself is a normal European wheel with 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero, so the roulette bets you already know all work the same way.
How to play Lightning Roulette
The rules take a minute to learn. Each round follows these steps:
- Choose a chip value and place your bets while the betting timer runs. Every standard inside and outside bet is available.
- When betting closes, the presenter pulls a lever and lightning strikes between one and five numbers. Each one gets a multiplier from 50x to 500x, shown on the layout and in the studio.
- The automatic wheel spins the ball, and the winning number is shown on screen.
- If you have a straight-up bet on the winning number and that number was struck by lightning, your bet is paid at its multiplier.
- A straight-up win on a number without lightning pays 29:1. All other bets pay the same as in standard European roulette, and a new round begins.
Lightning Roulette payouts and multipliers
| Bet | Numbers covered | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up on a lightning number | 1 | 50:1 to 500:1 |
| Straight up on any other number | 1 | 29:1 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36 | 18 | 1:1 |
The lightning numbers are the whole point of the game. They are chosen at random after bets close, so you cannot see them before you place your chips. Multipliers only reach straight-up bets. A split, corner or outside bet that covers a lightning number still pays its normal odds.
The trade-off sits in the plain straight-up payout. At a standard European table, a single number pays 35:1. In Lightning Roulette it pays 29:1 unless the number is struck. Over a very large number of spins, the occasional 50x to 500x payout brings the straight-up return back to 97.10%, slightly below the 97.30% you get on every other bet. In other words, the house edge is about 2.9% on straight-up bets and 2.7% on the rest.
For most of your session, this means smaller single-number wins than usual, broken up now and then by a much bigger one. That pattern makes results swing more widely than at a classic table, even though the long-run return is almost the same.
Tips for playing Lightning Roulette
There is no strategy that beats the house edge, in Lightning Roulette or any other roulette game. The tips below are about keeping your play under control, not about winning:
- Decide on a budget before the first spin and treat it as spent. When it runs out, end the session.
- Choose bets that match what you want. Outside bets win close to half the time but never get a multiplier. Straight-up bets win about once in 37 spins and are the only route to lightning payouts.
- Remember that covering many numbers straight up raises your stake per round. It does not change the edge on each bet.
- Do not read meaning into the statistics panel. Lightning numbers and winning numbers are random every round, so hot and cold numbers do not predict anything.
- Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Our responsible gambling page lists places to turn to for support.
Online casinos in Canada are open to players aged 19 and over, or 18 and over in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
Lightning Roulette vs standard European roulette
| Feature | Lightning Roulette | Standard European roulette |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel | Single zero, 37 pockets | Single zero, 37 pockets |
| Plain straight-up payout | 29:1 | 35:1 |
| Multipliers | 1 to 5 numbers, 50x to 500x | None |
| Straight-up RTP | 97.10% | 97.30% |
| RTP on other bets | 97.30% | 97.30% |
| Result pattern | More swings on straight-up bets | Steady, fixed payouts |
If you mostly play red/black or dozens, the two games give you the same odds, and the choice is about the studio and the show. If you like straight-up bets, Lightning Roulette changes the experience more. You win less on most hits and occasionally much more.
Evolution has built several games on the same idea. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette adds more multiplied numbers and multipliers up to 2,000x. Lightning Baccarat brings lightning multipliers to the card table. Pragmatic Play’s Mega Roulette uses a similar 50x to 500x range.
Lightning Roulette FAQ
What is the RTP of Lightning Roulette?
Straight-up bets return 97.10% and all other bets return 97.30%. The lower straight-up figure comes from the 29:1 base payout, which is only partly offset by the multipliers.
How many lightning numbers are there in each round?
Between one and five numbers are struck in every round. Each gets a multiplier from 50x to 500x.
How are the lightning numbers chosen?
A random number generator picks the lightning numbers and their multipliers after betting closes. The winning number is decided separately by the physical wheel.
What is the maximum win in Lightning Roulette?
The top multiplier is 500x a straight-up bet. Your actual maximum depends on the bet limits and any payout cap set by the casino.
Is there a version with bigger multipliers?
Yes. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, released by Evolution in 2022, can put multipliers on up to ten numbers and raise a multiplier as high as 2,000x. Its plain straight-up payout is lower.
